Whether you’ve recently worked with a generator installation contractor or made a significant purchase like buying a car, there’s a huge chance you’ve encountered an upsell. It is a common sales tactic designed to induce you to buy more. It comes in many forms, including bigger purchases, upgrades or add-ons. When successful, upsells mean increased profits for the contractor or company.
What You Need to Know About Upsells
Many people consider upselling to be a bad thing because it drives the customers to spend more than they may have originally intended. However, this is not always the case, especially when the products or services in question provide a genuine, much-needed benefit to the customer. In these cases, the advantage is mutual.
Say you have an old asphalt shingle roof that has sprung multiple leaks. Pushing for a roof replacement without checking whether or not repairs are enough to solve the issue is an example of a bad upsell. A good upsell is when your roofer thoroughly assesses your roof, clearly lays out your options and explains the pros and cons of each.
Or, say you’re already in the market for a new generator and are planning to get the exact same unit you originally had. Your generator contractor may steer you toward a newer model with better specs or ask if you want to sign up for a maintenance plan.
Alleviating Upsell Pressure
When a contractor tries an upsell, you may feel pressured. You can, however, reduce stress and take away the power an upsell has on you. Here’s what you can do:
- Start by doing research. Learn about what the contractor is trying to sell you. It always pays to do so regardless of the product or service being offered to you.
- Ask questions. See to it that the person takes the time to explain the offer to you in complete detail. It’s an indication that they are offering a product or service that provides real value for money.
- Refuse. It’s okay to say no, especially if you don’t like the offer. After all, you have the final say as to what is good for you and your home.
