Routine maintenance and addressing problems immediately help prolong the lifespan of your roof. However, after years of protecting your home against weather extremes and harsh outdoor elements, your roof would eventually need replacement. When this time arrives, you want to be well prepared for your project.
Here’s a checklist to complete before executing your project.
Tell Your Neighbors About Your Project
Make sure to let your neighbors know that you are getting a new roof ahead of time. Doing so will give them enough time to prepare, and they won’t be surprised when the roof replacement starts. If your roofer is planning on hanging tarps from their roofs to prevent damage, also let them know.
Mow Your Lawn Before the Roof Replacement
Mowing your lawn before your project starts will allow your roofing contractor to check your yard for fallen debris, nails and other harmful objects. Keeping your grass short will help ensure your safety during and after the project.
Protect Valuable Items in Your Attic
Do you have items stored in your attic? There’s a possibility that shingles, nails and other debris may fall into these things or get into your insulation. Before your project starts, make sure to cover items in your attic with a tarp or plastic cover.
Don’t Forget About the Items on Your Roof
Is there a satellite dish on your roof? If there is, let your provider know before the construction begins. Your satellite provider will move the satellite to your siding and recalibrate it so you can still watch your favorite shows. However, if you don’t use the satellite anymore, let your roofing contractors know, and they will remove it.
Protect Your Garden
Your contractor will place tarps around your home’s perimeter, which will protect your plants, but may damage your flowers. To avoid this problem, consider planting annuals until the following year, or schedule your project in the fall.
